I’m always having to explain why line coverage is misleading. This is probably the best, most obvious example of why.

See, 100% coverage!

So let’s reformat some code, you know, just ‘cuz we prefer do … end rather than curly braces.

Oops.
Know what your tests do, people, don’t just look for the nifty green bar from rcov.

I really thought I would hate using autotest. Then one day I kinda got tired of using command-r to run the test file I was editing. Well, truthfully it was having to switch back to the test file when I was editing the actual code itself.

Just now I realized how freakin’ smart autotest manages to make itself. I changed a fixture yml file and went over to the autotest window to kick it, assuming it wouldn’t run all the tests that use that fixture. Nope. It was happily running all the ones that depend on it. Freakin’ magic.

Now that I get annoyed when autotest isn’t running, I know I’m officially a convert.

I’ve got the beginnings of a new system. I figured out the printer at work also happens to be able to scan documents and send me a PDF, which makes doing it really easy. I have to scan as A5, rather than classic, but I only lose a few millimeters at the bottom. So without further ado, here are the workouts I did last week.

I set up a bunch of smart playlists to help me finish this. Each playlist is 3 unrated songs from my library. One playlist per day.

I’ve been rating 3 songs a day for a while now. I still have a ton of unrated songs, but I have found a few gems that I didn’t even know I had.

That said, at this rate (Ha! No pun intended) it will take me over a year and a half to rate them all. That’s assuming I rate all my new music as it comes in… which, in fact, I’ve been very good at.

Now, realistically, a year and a half isn’t all that long when you consider that this incarnation of my iTunes library has existed for over two years now, and I still have 1800+ unrated songs. I just wasn’t getting around to rating vast swaths of my library because, lets face it, that’s boring as hell.

611 days to go.

I finally got a power cage as part of a whole set of stuff. I saw it on craigslist Thursday night, and it was in my garage Saturday afternoon.

So here’s what I got…

Power cage

Oly bar

IronMaster adjustable dumbbells, up to 120 each

Power hooks

Plate mates

A ton of oly plates (well not literally, a 1/4 ton, literally)

FID bench

Trap bar

There’s some other misc stuff that I don’t fully understand. He had bought the set off of some guy who was apparently very hardcore. He had welded together some pipe fittings to be able to load plates on and work on his outward grip… i.e., put hand in the pipe and push out, then pull up the plates. Ow.

And last, but not least, a picture of all the stuff disassembled in my garage.

Maybe I’m just ultra picky, but it seems to me that Windows has the Mac beat hands down when it comes to recipe management software. I can’t find a Mac app that does what I want. I don’t think I want much just the following:

Calculate nutritional information. Partial credit for at least tracking it for me, I can figure it out once… but you have to let me say “I made 1.25 of this thing, because that’s how much chicken I had, figure out the calories.” I could come up with some hacks, but everything I looked at only scaled by fixed amounts, like 1/2, 1 1/2, 2 times, etc.

Help me plan my meals for the week.

Make me shopping list.

See, it took me all of 30 seconds of googling to find a Windows program that did all this. And then some. It’s really kinda cool looking, and is making me consider firing up Parallels to give it a whirl.

On the Mac side, I’ve tried everything verstiontracker knows about. Twice. Six months apart. They all suck. The ones that track nutritional information of some kind either get it very very wrong (calories, carbs, fat… WTF? Where’s protein?) or they don’t bother and get it all nice and shiny. Why the fuck do I need Spotlight support for my recipes. I’m not going to search my computer for ‘cookies’ and go “oh yeah, those cookies, I should have some.” If I’m searching for food to make, I’m going to have a pretty specific context to it.

Sure, spotlight support is easy, but a the expense of other features? It seems to me that the Mac applications are only about six months behind. Maybe a year. For one guy full-time. What boggles my mind is that they’ve not caught up in the time since I last went looking for a meal planning kind of program, they’re basically frozen in time.

Maybe my dream app will help out with this one. I certainly won’t be able to make the time to write it my own damn self… which is really what I need to do, but Excel is “good enough” for the time being.

The ironic part is that this is a program that everyone has written at least once. It’s like “Computers 101″ for nerds. You’d think someone would have come along and done something different by now. Different like how Delicious Library was different, even though everyone had written (or thought about writing) a database app to track their books.

Another week down when I don’t post mid-week. Not a big deal, except that I slacked on eating well this week. I only lost half a pound off the trend, and I’m actually up a bit on the actual weight. More training this week than last week, but not enough lifting… none, actually. A new PR for a 5K run, though, which is good.

This last week’s training was:

Bike 0:30:00

Run 1:09:58

Walk 2:18:47

Total 3:58:45

I’ll have to post what my triathlon planner looks like. It blows my mind how anal I am about this stuff. I’ve decided to embrace my ODC tendencies. Hell, in general tri geeks are way more anal than I am.
This last week’s training was:

Bike 0:23:05
Run 0:23:01
Walk 2:14:03
Lift 0:32:44
Elliptical 0:10:00
Total 3:42:53

Yep, [...]

Run 0:23:01

Total 3:42:53

Yep, I slacked. I think this is where it’s good that I’m tracking time spent rather than days that I “worked out”. Used to be that 10 minute morning session on the elliptical would have counted as a work out when looking back to see how often I was working out. I’m also up a little bit, but I think that’s fluctuation. I’m down 1 pound off the trend, so that’s good, at least. I just can’t let the momentum go away.

I bought a new bike, so I should be getting in a lot more bike time. Something about new gear that makes me want to actually use it. Pictures of that posted tomorrow.
