Comment, comment, this should not happen.

My laptop crapped out again. It’s back now, after a new logic board. At least it’s working for the time being. I wasn’t exactly confident that a second logic board replacement would fix it. I mean, the tech basically said, “That shouldn’t happen,” when I told him what was going on.

Basically, it would boot up chug along for a few days and randomly lock up. Then the weird part, the screen would go into a test pattern mode. Black, white, red, green, blue, then a couple black and white test patterns. Because I’m a nerd, here’s a movie of the laptop in the act.

The good news is that the Apple store turned it around inside of 24 hours and just one more major repair wins me a new laptop.

Update: I made WordPress make the video an enclosure in the feed. Woo, woo! I’m a podcaster.

Update, again: Apparently you have to be subscribed to the RSS2 feed for it to actually work, not the Atom feed.

Way more clever.

See, this counts as a separate one, cut it’s more clever than just a blog post. And it’s still the day in the timezone the server is in. So there.

Plus, I love you, Aoife.

See where I got it.

More letters equals better.

Posted in General at 11:34 pm

Tvma.gifI’m watching the Nip/Tuck season finale right now. T, V, M, A, S, L, V. I’m pretty sure that more letters means I’ll like it better.

I’m back in the green.

I have this spreadsheet that I use to track how well I’m eating. I have it broken down into columns for each meal, plus a treat. Green is good, red is bad. At the bottom I tally up the percentage of green days and that is green or red based on a threshold I set.

Screenshot of my spreadsheet

As of today I’ve gotten back over that threshold, despite a few days of holiday drinkin’ and eatin’.

FWIW, the two numbers on the left is the percentage of days I’ve been under the trend line for my weight and waist measurements. Those don’t get a threshold, since they’re basically out of my control. The one on the far right is workouts. I busted my ass enough earlier in the month to compensate for the days off resting my busted up knee.

I’m finally catching up on my RSS feeds and I came across, “The Printable CEO” (via 43 Folders), which is basically the same thing. I like his weighted point total. I plan on applying that idea to my spreadsheet, so I can get away from the black and white good/bad distinction of what I’ve been doing. The idea being that at some later date I’ll be able to improve even on perfect eating every day.

It’s almost habit…

Posted in Fitness at 11:33 am

I’ve gotten cardio in before leaving the house in the morning two Mondays in a row now. If I keep this up, it’ll be a habit.

A good one, too. My resting heart rate was down to 61 BPM this morning.

Goals page

Posted in Fitness at 11:35 pm

I decided I needed some minor amount of accountability. Plus a page that I can look at to see how much has gotten crossed off. It’s over on the right and right here.

New Weight Loss Page

Posted in Fitness at 3:09 am

I’ve added a page that’s updated automatically that details my weight loss over the years. It’s a set of charts I have from the spreadsheets I use to track my weight. I doubt it’s terribly useful for anyone but me, but now it’s out there for anyone to see. Theory is, if I even think someone is watching I won’t let myself plateau (or worse, trend back upward) just to avoid the potential embarssment.

Reality is, just the act of maintaining the charts is what keeps me in line.

More Links

Posted in General at 12:44 am

Normally I wouldn’t point out links I just added, but these two are extremely useful.

First is Fit to be Men. This is a great site for motivation and advice. It’s basically what the Men’s Health forums used to be before they lost the good editors who would answer questions.

Second is Motivation to Move. This is an awesome podcast about keeping up with general diet and fitness. He has a number of minute long snippets that come out one per day.. you really can’t say you can’t make time for a minute a day. I prefer the half hour or so long podcasts that come out on saturday, though.

Really, this post is just my google juice duty for people who’ve helped me.

New Workout Log

Posted in Workout Logs at 12:19 am

Now that I’m subscribed to .Mac I have a much more clever and interesting way to track workouts. Since I already had a calendar for my future workouts, I figured I’d just publish it and link to it from here.

No, it’s not anything I couldn’t do with a regular web host and say PHP iCalendar. But that solution requires me to actually do work. Never-mind how little work it would have been. Well, I guess my webhost doesn’t support WebDAV, so there is that. Mostly this didn’t occur to me until after I got .Mac and it was brain-dead simple to do straight from iCal.

It’ll give me a nice clear indication of how much work I’m doing with very little effort. Especially the nicely highlighted dates in the left side four month calendar. It should be pretty clear to anyone who’s watching when I’m slacking off.

Update: It’s now linked from the sidebar.
