Weird Subversion Corner-case

Posted in Programming at 11:49 am

I’ve been using Subversion for real development for a few months now. I’m mostly surprised this didn’t come up sooner.

It seems subversion doesn’t handle the case where two different people add the same file at the same time. The second person to check in won’t be able to. It fails for directories, too, and the error message can be confusing.

When you do an svn up you’ll see a message like this:

bash-2.05b$ svn up
svn: Failed to add directory 'baz': object of the same name already exists

But on a commit you’ll see this:

bash-2.05b$ svn commit -m "testing subversion, still"
Adding baz
svn: Commit failed (details follow):
svn: MKCOL of '/viper/!svn/wrk/6b9bcd38-b2fe-0310-95ff-9d1a44098866/sandboxes/ohammersmith/trunk/baz': 405 Method Not Allowed (http://svn.motricity.com)

If it’s a file, the error message is much more useful.

So the moral of the story is, make sure you do an svn up before you attempt a commit. You should do it, anyway, and the error messages are way more helpful.

Davis Hasselhoff

Posted in General at 7:33 pm

David Hasselhoff sings. I know this. I had no clue until I wandered into the wrong part of the iTunes Music Store how absolutely ridiculous some of his stuff is. Case in point… his album, Sings America. There’s no way he can take himself seriously. I really hope he’s going for the campy feel like Shatner.

Intelligent. Falling.

The Onion | Evangelical Scientists Refute Gravity With New ‘Intelligent Falling’ Theory:

“According to the ECFR paper published simultaneously this week in the International Journal Of Science and the adolescent magazine God’s Word For Teens!, there are many phenomena that cannot be explained by secular gravity alone, including such mysteries as how angels fly, how Jesus ascended into Heaven, and how Satan fell when cast out of Paradise.”

I love the Onion.

Upgraded WordPress

I should have done it a while ago. I finally got to it this morning. Hopefully I no longer have that bug that caused everything posted from MarsEdit to end up in the Uncategorized category, in addition to whatever I picked in MarsEdit.

Update: Yep, the bug is gone. And this will tell me if updates work properly.

Music industry whines again… film at 11.

WRAL.com - Tech - CD-Burning Bigger Problem Than File-Sharing:

“The chief executive for the Recording Industry Association of America said ‘burned’ CDs account for 29 percent of all recorded music obtained by fans in 2004.”

I like how they’re very careful not to imply that such copies of music were obtained illegally. You also have to wonder if they’re counting the copy of a disc I make for my car. If so, their numbers are complete bullshit… or at the very least imply that a lot of people like making copies of the CDs they buy.

I overestimatd how much I could do on wide-grip bench. I’ll drop it to 175 for the next workout.

Google Saves a Hummingbird

Posted in General at 8:01 pm

I got home from work today and there was a hummingbird in the garage. Hummingbird Honestly, I had no clue what to do, and he certainly didn’t look like he was gonna figure out he needed to come down a good 8 feet to be able to clear the garage door.

Google to the rescue. Apparently this is a rather common occurrence. The Wikipedia blurb wasn’t all that helpful, since our garage has a 15 foot (or so) ceiling and there’s no way for us to get up there and grab him. But the information at hummingbirds.net did the trick.

We closed the garage, turned out the lights and let him land. It took us entirely too long to find him after he landed, but we finally did. After much chasing we got him contained and brought him back outside.

I’m not sure what I would have done, were this 20 years ago and there wasn’t something as handy as google. I think I’ll go update the wikipedia with more detailed information.
