The Anxiety of Getting Things Done

Posted in Productivity at 12:24 pm

This sounds like a well-oiled system for handling paper stuff.

Ishbadiddle: The Anxiety of Getting Things Done:

“As this is a largely-paper based system, I end up using a lot of paper — printing things out to put in the tickler, file, put in coverslips, the ‘To Read’ pile, and so on. I’m constantly recycling paper — there’s a box under my desk full of scrap paper.

Why paper instead of bits? Primarily because the computer is a great multi-tasking tool. And that’s the problem — because multi-tasking is so easy, I multitask. And when I multitask, I tend to divide my attention, wander through projects, look up something on the Internet, etc etc etc. My next project is to figure out how to create a ‘Desk Kanban’ on screen — perhaps with multiple desktops? As it stands, I’ve found that one of the most useful time management tools I have at my disposal is the ‘off’ button on my monitor.”

(Via lifehacks.org.)

And that right there is the kernel of the problem I’m wrestling with. I can’t just abandon the computer, since I have to do things that require a computer (i.e., programming). I’m better off finding a system that will mesh with the computer. Maybe something as straight-forward as an analogue of the project coverslip he talks about. With spotlight that could live pretty much anywhere and still be findable. I’ll have to think on that.

macosxhints - Use Core Image Fun House to create artistic photos:

“Have you noticed this app in your Developer folder? It is just cool. It lets you to create, within a minute, some very crazy effects.”

This and Quartz Composer effing rock. Too bad you need the developer tools.

Use a Save As shortcut for smart folders

macosxhints - 10.4: Use a Save As shortcut for smart folders:

“I was just working a second ago and I pressed the Option key while I was doing a Spotlight finder search. When I did so, the Save button (by the plus sign) turned into a Save As button.”

That’s truly useful. I wish there weren’t so many Menu’s and Buttons in OS X that change on the Option key press. In this case, the context menu changes, too (the gear menu). I can see having only one button, but I don’t see why they don’t have two menu items in that dropdown.

Tom’s Hardware Guide: Tom’s Hard News:

“Asustek, not Quanta, will produce Apple’s upcoming widescreen iBook laptop Mac. So claims a report in Taiwan’s Economic Daily News, which adds weight to rumours published in April that the Mac maker is preparing a consumer-oriented widescreen notebook.”

Ahhh, a reason to upgrade before the intel macs come out. :)

Some much needed recouperation.

Posted in Fitness at 2:13 am

I haven’t done any kind of workout since Wednesday’s soccer game (another goal, yay me). I think I needed the recuperation. I was pushing myself pretty hard with tennis Sunday and Tuesday and soccer games Monday and Wednesday.

Maybe I let myself slack off a little too long. I just finished doing some AIS and foam and my legs feel a lot better than I have in a few days. They’re not nearly as sore, and definitely looser.

Good news is we have a soccer BYE next week, and I’ll be in San Franciso for JavaOne the next week… so, I have two weeks of lighter workouts coming to me.

Now that I’ve gotten back into consistent workouts with Core Performance prelim, I think I’m going to move onto some amalgam of CP Soccer and CP Tennis.

Netflix Sidebar

There’s a new sidebar segment to the right. It’s the next 10 items in my Netflix queue. I just installed the MyNetflix Wordpress plugin. Quick and easy. :)

Winner: Jem & The Holograms”

But, of course.

Why you gotta do Robot Chicken like that?

Posted in General at 4:06 pm

The Onion A.V. Club has an interview with the creators of ATHF. Why they don’t mention Robot Chicken is beyond me. That is the most awesomest show, ever! Any time Voltron can get served is a good time.

The Onion A.V. Club | Matt Maiellaro & Dave Willis :

O: Are there any limits imposed on you?

DW: There have been recently, with standards.

MM: We’re not allowed to show sex. We need to stay away from specific religions. We pushed the envelope of blood on Aqua Teen. The blood factor’s loosened up a little bit.

DW: They’re real arbitrary about stuff. It’s like, ‘Limit the blood to a three-second spray.’

MM: Like anything more would be too gory. They’ve actually defined what would be pornographic and what wouldn’t.

DW: That’s why we did that episode where someone’s head gets blown off and a rainbow comes out of their neck.

MM: Christianity’s a little touchy.

O: What about Judaism?

MM: Nah, that’s okay. We can bash away, ’cause that’s not a religion, it’s a tradition. [Laughs.]”

Mmmmmm, sacraligious.

Fortunately no one seems to be injured, including the cat (who was on her return trip from the vet).

No morning wood for you!

Wired News: Sex Tech Conquers Nasty Past:

“One contraption encircles the penis and attaches to the pubic hair with little clamps. If an erection occurs during the night, the clamps pull the hair, which wakes the wearer so he can make sure he doesn’t ejaculate.”

Owie.
